Time, safety, and best practices have educators rethinking ways of getting students organized and on track.  Whether transitioning to new learning activities, reviewing directions, or pausing to reflect on work, trying to bring students back to attention can be challenging and a time-waster.  Getting students’ attention effectively doesn’t need to play out like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s military-style whistle in Kindergarten Cop.  Using strategies from the Responsive Classroom, Schwenksville Elementary School Principal Krista Venza plans on using chimes throughout the building to establish consistent student attention expectations.

Staff throughout Schwenksville will use the chimes that are a key part of the Responsive Classroom learning model. The Responsive Classroom focuses on academic and social-emotional learning and is built upon cohesion, attentive learning environments, and developing listening and self-regulation skills.  Staff can further develop their use of the chimes by attending additional training and collaborating with experienced peers.

To support this learning opportunity, PVSD Foundation provided funds to purchase 30 chimes that will be used to support this initiative.  This support shows the value PVSD Foundation places on building a positive and inclusive learning environment for all students and staff.

There are so many techniques that teachers can use to gain the attention of the class.  We typically rely on our voices and or clapping sounds.  The chime provides a totally different sound.  The students can hear it over other sounds.  It has been very effective thus far. Teachers don’t always have access to materials, technology, and other resources that can make the difference between a lesson that is forgotten the next day and one that lasts beyond graduation. That’s where you come in. Your contribution to the PVSD Foundation helps ensure that the Foundation can continue to support teachers in delivering enriching educational opportunities for all students when tax dollars and traditional revenue streams fall short.
