Through experiences at the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit’s STEELS Expo, a host of different science opportunities were presented to teachers to implement in their classrooms.  One such opportunity offers national and state-level competitions for students focused on designing effective wind turbines.  This challenge asks students to engineer turbine blades to generate electricity and test them out in a custom wind tunnel, all while doing so in a fun, competition-based format.

Evergreen Elementary School 4th Grade Teacher Kevin Tomlinson is looking to implement the KidWind challenge with his students as they develop an understanding of engineering, design, collaboration, and renewable energy.  These topics are increasingly relevant through the new science standards rolling out in Pennsylvania.  By joining the KidWind challenge, students can be at the forefront of this project, potentially connecting with students across the state at the competitions hosted at various Penn State satellite campuses. KidWind offers multiple options and learning opportunities, such as in-person events, virtual challenges, art contests, and even a chance to host and sponsor your local event.

To support this learning experience, PVSD Foundation provided financial support to purchase the classroom set of KidWind supplies.  It shows the importance that PVSD Foundation places on collaborative learning experiences that support student growth and engagement.

Energy Fair

On June 11, 2025, Mr. Tomlinson’s students showcased their innovative plans to bring renewable energy to Evergreen Elementary (and some even expanded to Middle School East and the High School) during a special Energy Fair that felt straight out of Shark Tank.

Guests and parents explored student-created models, listened to persuasive sales pitches, and asked thoughtful questions about each team’s renewable energy solutions. Attendees received “Voicheck-bucks” at the door and had the chance to support their favorite ideas by placing investments in containers on stage.

It was a fun, interactive way to celebrate student learning, creativity, and the future of sustainability in PV. The Foundation can’t wait until the next one!

Support Projects like KidWind Challenge

Teachers don’t always have access to materials, technology, and other resources that can make the difference between a lesson that is forgotten the next day and one that lasts beyond graduation. That’s where you come in. Your contribution to the PVSD Foundation helps ensure that the Foundation can continue to support teachers in delivering enriching educational opportunities for all students when tax dollars and traditional revenue streams fall short.
